Crete is always a popular location for our single parent holiday makers – this will be our 4th visit to this lovely destination. And with a lovely 4 star hotel in a small and friendly Cretan resort, it’s easy to see why!
With an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. White sandy beaches that look out over the clear blue seas of the Mediterranean make the island one of Europe’s most popular holiday destination.
Crete is more like a small country than another Greek island. It’s not just Greece’s largest island, but arguably its most fascinating and diverse. Its remarkable history is evident across the island, from the ruins of the Minoan palace of Knossos to the Venetian fortresses of Rethymo; from old mosques and Byzantine monasteries to the cave that is the legendary birthplace of Zeus. The Venetian port of Hania in Western Crete is one of Greece’s most evocative cities and the capital, Iraklio, is a dynamic city, the fifth largest in Greece.
Crete is renowned for its natural beauty and diverse landscape. Spectacular mountain ranges dotted with caves are sliced by dramatic gorges that spill out to sea. The rugged interior is interspersed with vast plateaus and fertile plains. The east boasts Europe’s only palm-tree forest beach and the south coast has some of the most stunning beaches and isolated coves.
Avoiding the tourist traps and the August crowds, we’ll be staying in the picturesque Sissi by-the-sea, 45 kilometers east of Heraklion in eastern Crete. Sissi is a traditional fishing village and a pleasant surprise, well hidden at the end of a narrow, winding road after turning off from the main, national highway.
Arriving at Sissi, you immediately realise that everything here is much different than neighbouring Malia or nearby Hersonissos. What’s missing are the thousands of tourists and multitude of bars and clubs that result in a more hectic atmosphere. In Sissi, life flows at a much more easy and calm pace – ideal for single parent holidays, a great location for our group.
Life in Sissi revolves around the lovely little port in the rich, blue sea. There is a pier on one side of the harbour where the local fishing boats are secured, and a common, picturesque site is one of the fishermen’s women cleaning the catch of the day by the shore. This fresh fish, and the other edibles of the sea, is what lures many local residents from Heraklion to Sissi’s tavernas, which are built high on the port’s pier. And, of course, every new visitor should remember the golden rule of dining: “If the locals eat there, you know the food is good!”
On the shore across from the port there is a small sandy beach for anyone who can’t resist taking a dip in the crystal clear Mediterranean, which is always calm here, thanks to the wave-breaker. Immediately after the beach, there is a beautiful hotel garden, with numerous flowing palms and colourful flowers. It is certainly one of Crete’s most picturesque sights, which makes Sissi’s special little port even more unique.
There is a small sandy beach within the port of Sissi protected by a wave-breaker, a better beach is to be found only 500 metres to the east, Boufos beach, small and sandy with umbrellas and a beach taverna.
There are two dates available for this holiday:
Monday 10th August for 7 nights
Wednesday 19th August for 7 nights.

Suitable for all ages, Sissi is away from tourist masses and overcrowded beaches found in some resorts in August, with a flavour of “real” Greece.

A great way to start off the holiday is a trip on the “happy train” in Sissi,a great opportunity to see what Sissi is like before you start walking around and something the kids will really enjoy.
In the last few years tourism has begun to develop in Sissi: In the centre of Sissi is the picturesque, little harbour as well as the tavernas, little shops and minimarkets. Sissi is the starting point of many beautiful walks (or even cycle rides for anyone feeling energetic).South of Sissi is Epano Sissi ( Higher Sissi ), which is a very beautiful traditional Cretan village. Because of its central location day trips to Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Chersonissos and the traditional village of Vrachassi belong to the possibilities. The beaches of Sissi are small, but beautiful. The best known beach is the beach of Boufou, just outside the village.
There are many excursions running from Sissi: sail to Spinalonga, a haunting old leper colony; enjoy the tropical paradise and crystal seas of Chrissi island; visit the ancient palace of Knossos or combine a little adventure with a Jeep safari. A trip to the water park is always popular with the children and a beach party is a must!

" “The whole thing worked brilliantly. I have to say I was a little apprehensive when the green bags arrived but it couldn’t have worked out better for us. Linda was a great coordinator – friendly, helpful and laid back, which helped us all to relax straight away.
Lovely quiet location, small family run feel, beautiful gardens, great company. It’s great to know I can plan and book a super holiday for us both. Matilda had the time of her life and saw that she wasn’t the only child from a single parent family. Many thanks.” "
" it was chance to socialise rather than having a holiday with the kids and no adult company. Works for the kids well as they don't just get stuck with mum:) "
" The location was perfect - quiet, in walking distance of beaches and the lovely town and harbour. The hotel staff were so friendly and accommodating - I would definitely recommend. I was booked into a room with a double bed which they happily and quickly changed with no fuss. And on arrival at past 10pm we were offered food from the buffet which was totally unexpected "
" “My son really loved the holiday and meeting other children. He absolutely grew in confidence in the swimming pool as he made friends and spent the days largely playing in the pool with new friends. I loved how the 2 eight year old girlfriends he made would come to the door of our room and call for him for dinner!
The write up was accurate and the pictures too – both these and the text absolutely got the ethos and environment bang on.
We couldn’t fault this holiday. It was absolutely what I wanted and needed. Beautiful location, great standard of hotel. It was a great group, and good to be able to dip in or out of the group aspect with no pressure. Very relaxed. We all pitched in to signing up for the Aqua slide day out which was a lot of fun, then a few of us informally on the last day rented Quad bikes for the day and scoured a little of the island. Best fun I’ve had in ages!
It was like being part of a group holiday family and I could at times just relax knowing that my son was being watched by others in the group, especially once closer friendships were forged which happened naturally and quickly.” "
" “Lovely location, hotel, pool.Lovely people, everything I hoped it would be. It was just what we needed. Being the sole parent of a teenager who cant stand the sight of me a lot of the time, it was great to have other adults and kids for both of us to talk to and spend time with. It meant we could holiday together but not drive each other mad. Everyone was really lovely and the whole environment felt very supportive.” "
" So easy and relaxing. kids had plenty of other similar aged children to play with. The highlight? Quadbiking, all the kids wanted a go on the quadbikes that some of us had hired.
Jake, Jasmine and loved our latest holiday in Crete with SWK. We met some old friends and made some new ones too. The hotel and resort were fantastic, the hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. "
