Skiing in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is rapidly becoming a favourite for family ski-ing – great for all skiing abilities with interesting runs, comfortable hotels and prices that don’t break the bank. We’re heading to Borovets for our ski-ing holiday, the oldest Bulgarian winter resort is with a history from 1896.

The real charm of Borovets is seen in winter. The excellent skiing in the area attracts thousands of mountain lovers from Bulgaria and overseas. Huddled in  pine woods 1,390 meters above sea level, the highest pistes top 2,600m,  with snow cover usually reaching from December through to April.

The Location

Situated within easy reach of Sofia airport, Borovets is a Alpine type resort with very good conditions for snow sports during the winter:  there is skiing, night-skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon and ski-doo, in the resort. Over the years Borovets has developed into a popular and good quality ski resort with excellent hotels, restaurants, discos, shops and a good choice of pistes and lifts.

The Ski-ing

The Borovets area is great for all abilities. For beginners, there is a a high standard of English speaking instruction and the nursery slopes are gentle. There’s a good variety of runs for intermediates all serviced by a well organised life system including a six seat gondola lift.

With 45 kilometres of pistes of varying difficulty, there’s certainly plenty of choice. The pistes are grouped into 3 regions:  Sitnqkovo – Martinovi Baraki – pistes; Markudjik and Yastrebets. The pistes on Yastrebets are the best with the resort being a regular host of various winter sports competitions (It’s also twice hosted World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing). Its biathlon track is one of the best in Europe. For the expert skiers there is the testing World Cup run, one of the more challenging pistes in the Yastrebets area or the excellent skiing through the trees and off-piste.  With 14 snow cannons for artificial snow, snow cover is guaranteed.
